Pain around the prostate, a curved erection or worries about size? What prostatitis and Peyronie’s disease are, how urologists treat them, and the truth about penis enlargement medicine.
Men in Ghana often search privately for help with pelvic pain, a bent erection or penis size, and end up buying expensive “treatment medicine” or creams. These concerns are common and talking to a doctor is confidential. Here are honest answers about what helps.
Prostatitis
Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland. It is different from prostate enlargement and prostate cancer, and it often affects younger men.
Types and signs
- Acute bacterial prostatitis: sudden fever, chills, pain between the legs or in the lower back, painful or difficult urination. This needs urgent medical treatment with antibiotics.
- Chronic bacterial prostatitis: repeated urinary infections; treated with a longer antibiotic course after urine tests.
- Chronic pelvic pain syndrome, the most common type: pelvic, testicle or penile pain, discomfort on ejaculation, urinary symptoms, without proven infection. Treatment combines medicines that relax the prostate, pain relief, pelvic floor physiotherapy and stress management. Repeated antibiotics usually don’t help.
Painful urination with discharge can also be an STI. See STIs in Ghana.

Peyronie’s disease (penile curvature)
- Scar tissue (a plaque) forms inside the penis, causing a new bend, pain on erection, a lump, or shortening.
- A slight natural curve that has always been there is normal and needs no treatment.
- In the early phase, pain often settles over 12–18 months, and the curve may stabilise.
- Treatments a urologist may offer: traction devices, injections into the plaque, and, once stable, surgery for curves that prevent sex.
- Creams and oral supplements have not been shown to straighten the penis.
Penis size worries
- Most men who worry about size are in the normal range. Average erect length is about 13 cm.
- No pill, herb, cream or oil makes the penis permanently bigger. Some products sold for this contain hidden drugs or cause skin damage.
- Injections of oils or fillers by unqualified people cause serious deformity and infection.
- Losing belly fat can make the penis appear longer. Satisfaction in sex depends far more on communication and connection than size.
- If erections are the real concern, a doctor can check for causes such as diabetes, high blood pressure or stress and offer proven treatment.
When to see a doctor or urologist
- Fever with pelvic or urinary pain
- Blood in urine or semen
- A new curve, lump or pain in the penis
- Difficulty passing urine
- Erection problems lasting more than a few weeks
Frequently asked questions
Can prostatitis cause infertility?
It can affect semen quality in some men, but treatment usually helps. A semen analysis can check.
Is Peyronie’s disease cancer?
No. It is a benign scar-tissue condition.
Do penis enlargement pills work?
No. There is no evidence they increase size, and some are unsafe.
