Fatty liver is now one of the most common liver problems, and it often has no symptoms. Learn what causes it, how it affects your health, how to reverse it with weight loss and diet, and how antioxidants support your liver.
Fatty liver means too much fat has built up inside the liver cells. Doctors now call the most common type MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease), the condition once known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It is closely linked to weight, sugar and diabetes, and it is becoming common in Ghana as diets and lifestyles change. Most people only find out by chance on an ultrasound scan.
What causes fatty liver?
- Overweight and belly fat: the strongest cause. Fat around the waist goes hand in hand with fat in the liver. Recommended: Forever Lite Ultra
- Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance: high blood sugar pushes the liver to make and store fat.
- Too much sugar: soft drinks, malt drinks, sweetened tea and juice, pastries and sweets.
- Large portions of refined starch and fried food, especially late in the evening.
- Alcohol: regular drinking causes alcohol-related fatty liver and makes any fatty liver worse.
- High blood fats (triglycerides) and an inactive lifestyle.
- Other causes: some medicines, very rapid weight loss, and hepatitis B or C, which damage the liver in a different way.
Signs of fatty liver
Most people have no symptoms. Some notice tiredness or a dull discomfort under the right ribs. It is usually found on an abdominal ultrasound or through liver blood tests (raised ALT). If you are overweight, diabetic or drink regularly, ask your doctor to check your liver.
How fatty liver affects your health
Simple fatty liver is often mild, but in some people the fat inflames the liver. Over years, inflammation can cause scarring (fibrosis), then cirrhosis, and it raises the risk of liver cancer. Fatty liver also goes together with a higher risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, so the steps that heal the liver protect the heart too.

How to reverse fatty liver
1. Lose weight slowly
Losing 5% of your body weight reduces liver fat; losing 7–10% can also calm inflammation. Aim for about half a kilogram to one kilogram a week. Crash diets can make the liver worse.
2. Cut sugary drinks first
Replace soft drinks, malt drinks and sweetened juice with water, unsweetened tea or fresh fruit. This single change removes a large share of the sugar that turns into liver fat.
3. Change your plate
Half vegetables, a quarter protein (beans, fish, eggs, chicken without skin), a quarter starch such as brown rice, plantain or kenkey in modest portions. Choose grilled, boiled or steamed over fried.
4. Exercise most days
At least 150 minutes a week of brisk walking or similar activity reduces liver fat even before you lose weight. Add some strength exercises such as squats or push-ups.
5. Limit alcohol
If you have fatty liver, the less alcohol the better; many doctors advise stopping completely.
6. Control blood sugar and blood fats
If you have diabetes or high cholesterol, keep up your treatment and check-ups. Good control helps the liver heal.
7. Be careful with mixtures and painkillers
Avoid taking several herbal mixtures or bitters at once and never exceed the dose of paracetamol. Your liver has to process all of them.
Where supplements fit
No supplement melts liver fat on its own. Weight loss and diet do that. Some nutrients support the liver and heart while you make those changes: vitamin C and plant antioxidants (such as goji berry) support the body against everyday oxidative stress, omega-3 supports a healthy heart and normal blood fats, and green foods add vitamins, minerals and fibre.

When to see a doctor
See a doctor soon if you have yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, a swollen belly or legs, unexplained weight loss, or pain under the right ribs that does not go away. Go to hospital immediately if you vomit blood, pass black stools or become confused or very drowsy.
Frequently asked questions
Can fatty liver be reversed?
Yes, in its early stages. Losing 5–10% of your body weight, cutting sugar and alcohol, and exercising regularly can reduce liver fat and inflammation within months.
What should I avoid if I have fatty liver?
Sugary drinks and malt drinks, pastries, fried food, large portions of refined starch, alcohol, and unnecessary herbal mixtures or painkillers.
Is fatty liver serious?
Simple fatty liver is common and often mild, but in some people it causes inflammation that can scar the liver over years. It is also linked to heart disease and diabetes, so it is worth acting early.
How do I know if I have fatty liver?
Usually from an abdominal ultrasound or liver blood tests done for another reason, since it rarely causes symptoms. Ask your doctor for checks if you are overweight, diabetic or drink regularly.
Do supplements cure fatty liver?
No supplement cures fatty liver. Weight loss and diet are what work. Antioxidants and omega-3 can support liver and heart health as part of that plan.
