Why do headaches and migraines keep coming back? Learn the common triggers, practical home relief, the role of magnesium and B vitamins, and the warning signs that need urgent care.

Headaches and Migraines: Common Triggers, Home Relief and When to See a Doctor

Almost everyone gets a headache sometimes. But if you get them every week, or you have migraines that force you to lie down in a dark room, headaches can steal your work, study and family time. The good news is that most headaches have triggers you can identify and reduce.

Tension headache vs migraine

 Tension headacheMigraine
Feels likeA tight band around the head; dull, pressingThrobbing, often on one side
Other symptomsTight neck and shouldersNausea, sensitivity to light and noise; sometimes visual “aura” before
Daily activityYou can usually keep goingOften need to stop and lie down
Duration30 minutes to several hours4 hours to 3 days

Common triggers

  • Dehydration: very common in Ghana’s heat. Many people drink far less water than they need.
  • Skipped meals and long gaps between eating
  • Poor or irregular sleep, including too much sleep at weekends
  • Stress and tight muscles in the neck and shoulders
  • Long screen time and poor posture
  • Caffeine: too much, or sudden withdrawal
  • Alcohol, strong smells, bright light, loud noise
  • Hormonal changes around periods (for some women’s migraines)
  • Eye strain or uncorrected vision problems

Tip: keep a headache diary for 4 weeks. Note the date, time, what you ate and drank, sleep, stress and your period. Patterns usually appear quickly.

Home relief that helps

  1. Drink a large glass of water, then sip regularly.
  2. Eat something if you have skipped a meal.
  3. Rest in a dark, quiet room for migraines.
  4. Apply a cool cloth to the forehead, or warmth to tight neck muscles.
  5. Gently massage your temples, neck and shoulders.
  6. Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief, and avoid taking painkillers more than 2–3 days a week; overuse can cause “rebound” headaches.

Prevention habits

  • Drink water steadily through the day (more in hot weather).
  • Eat regular meals; carry a healthy snack.
  • Keep a regular sleep schedule.
  • Take screen breaks: every 20 minutes, look 6 metres away for 20 seconds.
  • Manage stress with exercise, prayer or meditation, and honest conversations. See how to improve emotional intelligence.
  • Get your eyes tested if headaches follow reading or screen work.

Nutrients and natural support

Some nutrients are commonly used to support people with frequent headaches. Magnesium is the most studied: low magnesium levels have been linked to migraine, and magnesium is often included in migraine prevention plans. Riboflavin (vitamin B2) has also been studied for migraine prevention. B vitamins and minerals support normal energy and nerve function.
