How to manage acne, fade dark spots and soften stretch marks safely on dark skin, without bleaching. Daily habits, what to expect, product options and when to see a dermatologist.
Acne, the dark marks it leaves behind, and stretch marks are among the most common skin worries in Ghana. Many people turn to strong “toning” creams, which often make things worse. Here is what actually helps, safely.
Acne
Why it happens
Acne forms when pores clog with oil and dead skin and bacteria cause inflammation. Hormones (teenage years, periods, PCOS), heavy oily products, stress, friction (phones, helmets, scarves) and some medicines can make it worse.
What helps
- Wash twice daily with a gentle cleanser; don’t scrub hard.
- Use light, non-greasy moisturisers and avoid heavy oils and pomades on the face.
- Don’t squeeze or pick: it causes dark marks and scars, especially on dark skin.
- Clean your phone screen and change pillowcases often.
- Be patient: acne treatments take 6–12 weeks to show results.
Dark spots (post-acne marks and uneven tone)
On dark skin, inflammation from acne, insect bites or burns often leaves dark marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). These usually fade over months.
- Sunscreen daily: sun makes dark spots darker and slower to fade.
- Treat the acne first, so new marks stop forming.
- Use gentle tone-evening products consistently.
- Avoid harsh scrubs and lemon juice on the skin, which can irritate and darken.
Stretch marks
Stretch marks form when skin stretches quickly: during pregnancy, growth spurts, weight gain or bodybuilding. New marks are often red, purple or dark; older ones fade to lighter lines.
- Keep skin well moisturised, especially during pregnancy and weight changes.
- Massage creams or oils in daily; consistency matters more than the brand.
- Newer marks respond best; older marks can soften but rarely disappear completely.
- Gain or lose weight gradually when possible.

Why you should avoid bleaching creams
Unregulated lightening creams may contain mercury, high-strength hydroquinone or strong steroids. Long-term use can cause thin, fragile skin, stretch marks, stubborn dark patches (ochronosis), infections and even kidney damage from mercury. FDA Ghana has warned against many such products. Choose gentle, registered products instead.
See a dermatologist if
- Acne is painful, deep (cysts) or leaving scars
- Acne appears suddenly in adulthood with irregular periods or excess hair
- Dark patches are spreading or not responding after several months
Frequently asked questions
How can I remove dark spots fast?
There is no safe instant fix. Daily sunscreen, gentle tone-evening products and treating acne help marks fade over weeks to months.
Can stretch marks be removed completely?
Usually not, but they can fade and soften significantly, especially if treated early.
Why do I get acne as an adult?
Hormones, stress, heavy skin or hair products and some medicines are common causes. See a doctor if it is severe or comes with other symptoms.
Is aloe vera good for acne?
Aloe gel can soothe irritated skin and is gentle for most people. It works best as part of a routine, not as the only treatment for moderate or severe acne.
