A simple morning and night skin care routine for heat, humidity and harmattan: how to cleanse, treat, moisturise and protect your skin with aloe-based products, plus tips for dry and oily skin.
Ghana’s climate is tough on skin: heat and humidity for most of the year, then the dry, dusty harmattan. A simple, consistent routine keeps skin clean, hydrated and even-toned. You don’t need ten products, just the right steps.
The 4 steps of any good routine
- Cleanse: remove sweat, oil, dust and makeup without stripping your skin. Recommended: Forever Renewing Skin Crème
- Treat: a serum or targeted product for your main concern (dryness, fine lines, uneven tone).
- Moisturise: lock in water. Even oily skin needs a light moisturiser. Recommended: Clear Skin Care Set
- Protect: sunscreen in the morning. Dark skin also gets sun damage and dark spots. Recommended: Forever Aloe Body Lotion
Morning routine
- Wash with a gentle cleanser or soap and lukewarm water. Recommended: Forever Aloe Liquid Soap
- Apply a light serum if you use one (for example a vitamin E serum).
- Moisturise with a lotion suited to your skin type. Recommended: Forever Avocado Face and Body Soap
- Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to the face and exposed skin.
Night routine
- Cleanse well to remove the day’s dust, sweat and makeup. Recommended: Forever Aloe Ever-Shield Deodorant
- Apply your treatment cream or serum.
- Use a richer moisturiser or cream, especially during harmattan.
- Don’t forget lips: a lip balm overnight prevents cracking.
Adjusting for your skin type and season
- Oily skin: gentle cleanser twice daily, light oil-free lotion, avoid heavy creams on the face.
- Dry skin: avoid harsh soaps; moisturise right after bathing while skin is damp; use richer creams.
- Harmattan: moisturise more often, use lip balm, drink more water, and use a richer body lotion.
- Sensitive skin: fewer products, fragrance-light options, patch test new products.
Why aloe vera?
Aloe vera gel is widely used on the skin for its soothing, cooling and hydrating feel, and it is generally well tolerated topically. Aloe-based products are a gentle choice for everyday use.

Avoid bleaching products
Creams containing hydroquinone at high strength, mercury or strong steroids, often sold as “toning” or “lightening” creams, can cause thinning skin, stubborn dark patches, stretch marks and serious health problems. Choose products that even out tone gently and protect from the sun instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best skin care routine for Ghana’s weather?
Gentle cleansing, a light moisturiser, sunscreen in the morning, and a richer cream at night, especially during harmattan.
Do dark-skinned people need sunscreen?
Yes. Melanin offers some protection, but sun exposure still causes dark spots, uneven tone and skin ageing.
Is aloe vera good for the face?
For most people, aloe-based products are soothing and hydrating. Patch test first if you have sensitive skin.
How often should I moisturise?
At least twice daily: after your morning and evening cleanse. More often in harmattan or if your skin feels tight.
