Fresh Breath, Body Odour and Grooming: A Daily Hygiene Guide for Hot Weather

In short

How to beat bad breath and body odour in hot weather, care for your teeth and gums, and avoid razor bumps: a practical daily hygiene guide with product options.

Fresh Breath, Body Odour and Grooming: A Daily Hygiene Guide for Hot Weather

Good personal hygiene is part of your professional brand. In Ghana’s heat, sweat and bacteria work fast, so a few consistent daily habits make a big difference to how fresh and confident you feel. As I often say in professional branding: people notice how you present yourself before they hear what you say.

Bad breath (halitosis)

Common causes

  • Food particles and bacteria on the teeth, gums and especially the tongue
  • Gum disease and tooth decay
  • Dry mouth (not drinking enough water, mouth breathing, some medicines)
  • Strong foods (onions, garlic), smoking and alcohol
  • Skipping meals and some digestive issues
  • Sinus or throat infections

What helps

  1. Brush twice daily for two minutes, including along the gum line.
  2. Clean your tongue daily with a tongue scraper or your toothbrush.
  3. Floss or use interdental brushes to clean between teeth.
  4. Drink water throughout the day.
  5. Visit a dentist every 6–12 months for cleaning and check-ups.

See a dentist or doctor if bad breath persists despite good oral care, or comes with bleeding gums, loose teeth, pain or a bad taste.

Body odour

Sweat itself has little smell. Odour comes when skin bacteria break down sweat, especially in the armpits and groin.

  • Bathe at least once daily (twice in hot weather or after exercise) and dry well.
  • Use a deodorant on clean, dry skin.
  • Wear breathable cotton clothes and change socks and underwear daily.
  • Wash clothes properly and dry them fully in the sun.
  • Strong foods, alcohol and stress can increase odour for some people.

Shaving and razor bumps

  • Shave after a warm shower, using a sharp, clean razor.
  • Shave in the direction of hair growth; don’t stretch the skin.
  • Apply a soothing, alcohol-free after-shave balm.
  • If bumps are frequent, consider clippers or a longer trim instead of a very close shave.

Hands

Washing with soap and water for 20 seconds is best. When water is not available, use an alcohol-based sanitiser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop bad breath permanently?

Brush twice daily, clean your tongue, floss, drink water and see a dentist regularly. Persistent bad breath may need dental or medical treatment.

Why do I smell even after bathing?

Bacteria return quickly in heat. Dry well, use deodorant, wear breathable fabrics and change clothes daily. See a doctor if odour changes suddenly.

Is fluoride-free toothpaste OK?

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay, and dentists generally recommend fluoride toothpaste. If you prefer fluoride-free toothpaste, be extra careful with sugar intake and dental check-ups.

How do I prevent razor bumps?

Prepare the skin with warm water, shave with the grain using a sharp razor, and soothe with an alcohol-free balm.
