Frequent night urination and a weak stream are common in men over 40. Learn the signs of an enlarged prostate, why screening matters in Ghana, how to support male fertility, and the natural support options.
Two areas of men’s health are often ignored until there is a problem: the prostate (especially after 40) and fertility (when a couple is trying to conceive). Both respond well to early attention.
Part 1: Prostate health
What is the prostate?
The prostate is a small gland below the bladder that helps produce semen. It often grows larger with age, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is not cancer, but it can squeeze the urine tube.
Common signs of an enlarged prostate
- Waking at night to urinate
- Weak or interrupted urine stream
- Difficulty starting to urinate
- Feeling the bladder is not fully empty
- Urgency or dribbling
Why screening matters
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in Ghanaian men, and men of African descent have a higher risk. Early prostate cancer often has no symptoms. Men over 40–45, or earlier with a family history, should discuss prostate checks (including a PSA blood test) with a doctor. Blood in urine or semen, bone pain or weight loss need prompt review.
Habits that support prostate and urinary health
- Reduce fluids 2 hours before bed and limit evening alcohol and caffeine.
- Stay active and maintain a healthy weight.
- Eat plenty of vegetables, tomatoes, fish and nuts; reduce red and processed meat.
- Don’t delay urinating for long periods.
Part 2: Male fertility
About half of a couple’s fertility challenges can involve the man. Sperm take around three months to develop, so changes you make today show in about 3 months.
- Avoid excess heat: tight underwear, laptops on the lap, long hot baths.
- Stop smoking and limit alcohol.
- Maintain a healthy weight and exercise moderately.
- Eat zinc- and antioxidant-rich foods: pumpkin seeds, nuts, fish, eggs, fruit and vegetables.
- Treat infections promptly; some sexually transmitted infections affect fertility.
- Get a semen analysis if you have been trying for a year (6 months if your partner is over 35).
Natural support options
Saw palmetto is the herb most often used for prostate and urinary comfort; studies on its effect are mixed. Zinc, selenium and antioxidants are commonly used to support male reproductive health.
