Diabetes in Ghana: High Blood Sugar, Type 2 Diabetes and Cholesterol Treatment Explained

Health & Wellness Oct 13, 2026 3 min read
In short

Signs of high blood sugar, how type 2 diabetes is diagnosed and treated in Ghana, what to eat, why cholesterol matters, and why you should never stop diabetes medicine for herbal "cures".

Diabetes in Ghana: High Blood Sugar, Type 2 Diabetes and Cholesterol Treatment Explained

Type 2 diabetes is increasing rapidly in Ghana, and many people only find out when complications appear. Diabetes cannot be cured by herbs, grains or teas, but it can be controlled, and early type 2 diabetes can sometimes go into remission with weight loss. The key is testing, the right treatment, and steady daily habits.

Signs of high blood sugar

  • Passing urine often, especially at night
  • Constant thirst
  • Tiredness, blurred vision
  • Slow-healing wounds, repeated infections (including yeast infections)
  • Tingling or numbness in the feet
  • Unexplained weight loss

Many people have no symptoms for years.

Testing

  • Fasting blood glucose: 7.0 mmol/L or higher on two occasions suggests diabetes.
  • HbA1c (average sugar over about 3 months): 6.5% or higher suggests diabetes.
  • Get checked if you are over 40, overweight, have high blood pressure, a family history, or had diabetes in pregnancy.

Treatment

  • Food and activity come first: smaller portions of starchy foods (rice, kenkey, banku, fufu, bread), more vegetables, beans and fish, fewer sugary drinks, and at least 30 minutes of walking most days. Recommended: Forever Arctic Sea Omega-3
  • Metformin is usually the first medicine. Others may be added.
  • Insulin is needed for type 1 diabetes and for some people with type 2. Needing insulin is not a failure.
  • Regular checks: HbA1c, blood pressure, kidneys, eyes and feet.

Whole grains such as fonio, millet and brown rice are good choices because they raise sugar more slowly than refined starch. They are healthy food, not medicine.

Cholesterol

  • High cholesterol has no symptoms but raises the risk of heart attack and stroke, especially with diabetes.
  • A lipid profile blood test measures it.
  • Reduce fried foods, fatty meat and processed snacks; eat more fibre, fish, nuts and vegetables. Recommended: Forever Aloe Vera Gel Mini
  • Doctors often prescribe a statin for people with diabetes or high risk.

The danger of stopping medicine

Many people in Ghana stop diabetes or cholesterol medicine after buying a “cure”. Blood sugar then rises silently, leading to kidney failure, blindness, foot ulcers and amputation, heart attack and stroke. If you want to try any supplement, discuss it with your doctor and keep taking your prescribed medicine.

Emergency signs

  • Very high sugar: extreme thirst, vomiting, confusion, drowsiness. Go to hospital.
  • Low sugar (on insulin or some tablets): shaking, sweating, confusion. Take sugar or a sweet drink immediately and seek help.

Frequently asked questions

Can type 2 diabetes be cured?

Not cured, but some people achieve remission (normal sugar without medicine) through significant weight loss, under medical supervision.

Which Ghanaian foods are good for diabetes?

Vegetables, kontomire, garden eggs, beans, fish, groundnuts in moderation, and smaller portions of starchy staples. Limit malt drinks, soft drinks and sweet pastries.

Is there herbal medicine for diabetes?

None has been proven to replace diabetes medicine. Some interact with medicines and can cause dangerously low sugar.

Related: hypertension and heart disease and kidney disease.
