Moringa, maca and fenugreek are three of the most popular natural powders in Ghana. Learn what each contains, the evidence behind common uses, how to take them and who should be careful.
Moringa, maca and fenugreek are popular natural products in Ghana, used for nutrition, energy, appetite and more. Here is what each one is, what the evidence says, and how to use them sensibly.
Moringa: the nutrient-dense leaf
Moringa oleifera grows widely across Ghana. Its dried leaf powder is naturally rich in vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, protein and antioxidants.
- Common uses: boosting the nutrient content of meals, general wellness.
- Evidence: strong as a nutritious food; small studies suggest possible effects on blood sugar and cholesterol, but more research is needed. Recommended: Forever Arctic Sea Omega-3
- How to use: start with ½–1 teaspoon daily in soups, stews, smoothies, porridge or juice; increase gradually to 1–2 teaspoons.
- Precautions: may lower blood sugar and blood pressure; avoid medicinal amounts in pregnancy (the root and bark are not safe in pregnancy).
Maca: the Peruvian root for energy and vitality
Maca is a root vegetable from the Andes, dried and powdered. It contains carbohydrates, protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals.
- Common uses: energy, stamina, libido and wellbeing for men and women.
- Evidence: some small studies suggest maca may improve sexual desire and mood; results are limited. There is no scientific evidence that maca enlarges the hips or buttocks.
- How to use: start with 1 teaspoon daily in smoothies, porridge or warm drinks, up to about 1–3 teaspoons.
- Precautions: ask a doctor first if you have thyroid problems, hormone-sensitive conditions, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Fenugreek: the seed for digestion and appetite
Fenugreek seeds have a slightly bitter, maple-like taste and are used in cooking and herbal teas.
- Common uses: digestion, appetite, blood sugar support, and traditionally by breastfeeding mothers.
- Evidence: some studies suggest fenugreek may help lower blood sugar in people with diabetes; evidence for other uses is limited.
- How to use: soak 1 teaspoon of seeds overnight and drink the water, brew as tea, or add powder to stews and curries.
- Precautions: avoid medicinal amounts in pregnancy (it can stimulate the womb); may lower blood sugar; can cause bloating and a maple-like body odour; avoid if allergic to peanuts or chickpeas.
