PCOS, Fibroids and Ovarian Cysts in Ghana: Symptoms, Fertility and Treatment Options

Health & Wellness Oct 13, 2026 3 min read
In short

A practical guide to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS/PCOD), uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts: signs, how they affect fertility, the medical treatments that work, and myths to avoid.

PCOS, Fibroids and Ovarian Cysts in Ghana: Symptoms, Fertility and Treatment Options

Irregular periods, heavy bleeding, pelvic pain and difficulty getting pregnant send many Ghanaian women searching for “fibroid medicine” or “PCOS treatment”. These conditions are common and very manageable with the right care, but no herbal product has been shown to dissolve fibroids or cure PCOS. Here is what actually helps.

PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome, also called PCOD)

Signs

  • Irregular, infrequent or absent periods
  • Excess facial or body hair, acne, hair thinning
  • Weight gain, especially around the waist
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

Diagnosis

A doctor uses your history, hormone blood tests and a pelvic ultrasound. Having “cysts” on a scan alone does not mean you have PCOS.

Treatment

  • Lifestyle: losing even 5–10% of body weight can restore periods and ovulation. Recommended: Forever Lite Ultra
  • The contraceptive pill regulates periods and reduces acne and hair growth.
  • Metformin helps insulin resistance in some women.
  • For fertility, doctors use ovulation medicines such as letrozole, and further fertility treatment if needed.
  • PCOS raises the long-term risk of diabetes, so check blood sugar regularly.

Uterine fibroids

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the womb. They are especially common in Black women and often appear in the 30s.

Signs

  • Heavy or long periods, sometimes causing anaemia (tiredness, dizziness)
  • Pelvic pain or pressure, a swollen lower belly
  • Frequent urination or constipation
  • Sometimes difficulty conceiving or pregnancy complications

Many fibroids cause no symptoms and need no treatment.

Treatment

  • Medicines to reduce bleeding and pain (such as tranexamic acid, hormonal treatments, a hormonal IUD)
  • Iron supplements for anaemia, as prescribed
  • Medicines that temporarily shrink fibroids before surgery
  • Myomectomy: surgery that removes fibroids and keeps the womb (for women wanting children)
  • Uterine artery embolisation or hysterectomy in some cases

Ovarian cysts

  • Most ovarian cysts are functional, linked to the monthly cycle, and disappear on their own within a few cycles.
  • A repeat ultrasound is often all that is needed.
  • Large, persistent or unusual cysts may need surgery; doctors check for endometriosis and, rarely, cancer.
  • Emergency: sudden severe one-sided pelvic pain with vomiting or fainting can mean a twisted or burst cyst. Go to hospital immediately.

When to see a gynaecologist

  • Periods soaking a pad every hour, or lasting more than 7 days
  • Periods absent for 3 months (and not pregnant)
  • Persistent pelvic pain
  • Trying to conceive for 12 months without success (6 months if over 35)

Frequently asked questions

Can fibroids be removed without surgery?

Medicines can control symptoms and shrink fibroids temporarily. Some procedures (like embolisation) avoid open surgery. No herb or tea removes fibroids.

Can I get pregnant with PCOS?

Yes. Many women with PCOS conceive, sometimes after weight loss or with ovulation medicine.

Do ovarian cysts cause infertility?

Most do not. Some conditions linked to cysts, such as PCOS and endometriosis, can affect fertility and are treatable.
