Practical help for painful periods, PMS, hormonal changes and low libido: what is normal, what helps at home, natural support options and the signs that need a doctor (such as fibroids).
Many women in Ghana accept painful periods, mood swings and low desire as something to “endure”. Some discomfort is common, but severe pain or big changes are not something you should just tolerate. Here is what is normal, what helps and when to get checked.
Period pain (menstrual cramps)
Cramps happen when the womb contracts to shed its lining. Mild to moderate pain in the first 1–2 days is common.
What helps
- Warmth: a hot water bottle or warm cloth on the lower tummy or back
- Gentle movement: walking or stretching
- Rest and hydration; reduce salty and sugary foods before your period
- Magnesium-rich foods: nuts, seeds, beans, leafy greens
- Pain relief: ask a pharmacist which option is suitable for you
See a doctor if
- Pain stops you going to school or work, or is getting worse each month
- Very heavy bleeding (soaking a pad every 1–2 hours), clots or periods over 7 days
- Pain during sex, between periods, or a swollen lower tummy
These can be signs of fibroids or endometriosis, which are common and treatable.
Hormonal balance and PMS
Mood changes, breast tenderness, bloating and cravings before periods (PMS) are common. Regular exercise, good sleep, less caffeine and sugar, and stress management help many women. Very irregular periods, acne with excess hair growth, or weight changes may point to conditions such as PCOS and need a medical check.
Low libido in women
Desire naturally changes with stress, tiredness, relationship issues, after childbirth, while breastfeeding, with some contraceptives and medicines, and around menopause. What helps:
- Rest and reduce stress where possible
- Open, kind communication with your partner; emotional connection matters (see emotional intelligence)
- Exercise, which improves energy, mood and body confidence
- Check whether pain, vaginal dryness or a medicine is involved, and discuss it with a health professional
Natural support options
Many women use natural products for cycle comfort, energy and vitality. Magnesium and some herbs are commonly used for menstrual comfort; maca is traditionally used for energy and libido. Evidence is limited and results vary.

Frequently asked questions
How can I stop period pain naturally?
Use warmth, gentle movement, rest and hydration. Eating magnesium-rich foods may help. See a doctor if pain is severe.
Is it normal to have very painful periods?
Mild to moderate cramps are common. Pain that disrupts daily life is not normal and should be checked for conditions such as fibroids or endometriosis.
Why is my libido low?
Common reasons include stress, tiredness, relationship issues, hormonal changes, some medicines and pain during sex. Identifying the cause is the first step.
Can supplements balance hormones?
Some nutrients and herbs are used to support wellbeing through the cycle, but they do not fix hormonal conditions such as PCOS or thyroid disease. See a doctor for diagnosis.
