Syphilis is curable with antibiotics, usually penicillin injections. Learn the symptoms at each stage, where to test in Ghana, what treatment involves, and why herbal remedies are not a cure.
Many people in Ghana search online for “syphilis treatment medicine” because they are worried, embarrassed or unsure where to go. Here is the most important fact: syphilis is curable. The cure is an antibiotic, usually penicillin given by injection, prescribed by a health professional. Herbal mixtures, “powders” and supplements do not cure syphilis, and relying on them allows the infection to keep damaging your body and spreading to others.
What is syphilis?
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It spreads through vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who has the infection, and from a pregnant woman to her baby. It often causes no obvious symptoms, so many people do not know they have it.
Symptoms by stage
| Stage | When | Common signs |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | About 3 weeks after infection (can be 10–90 days) | A painless sore (chancre) on the genitals, anus or mouth that heals by itself in a few weeks |
| Secondary | Weeks to months later | Skin rash (often on palms and soles), fever, sore throat, swollen glands, hair loss, tiredness |
| Latent | Months to years | No symptoms, but the infection is still present |
| Tertiary (late) | Years later if untreated | Damage to the heart, brain, nerves, eyes and other organs |
Neurosyphilis (infection of the brain and nerves) can occur at any stage and may cause headaches, confusion, vision or hearing problems, weakness or personality changes. It needs urgent hospital treatment.
Testing in Ghana
- A simple blood test detects syphilis. Rapid tests give results within minutes.
- Testing is available at government hospitals and polyclinics, many private clinics and laboratories, and in antenatal clinics (syphilis screening is part of routine pregnancy care).
- Get tested if you have a sore or rash in the genital area, have had unprotected sex with a new partner, have another STI, or your partner has been diagnosed.
- HIV and syphilis are often tested together; it is a good idea to check both.
Treatment: what actually cures syphilis
- Penicillin (benzathine penicillin injection) is the standard cure recommended by the World Health Organization. Early syphilis is usually cured with a single injection; later stages need more doses.
- People allergic to penicillin can be given other antibiotics by a doctor.
- Neurosyphilis and syphilis in pregnancy need specific treatment under medical supervision.
- After treatment, follow-up blood tests confirm the infection has cleared.
- Avoid sex until you and your partner(s) have finished treatment and been cleared, to prevent re-infection.
Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics, injections from unqualified sellers, or herbal products advertised as syphilis cures. Wrong or incomplete treatment can leave the infection active while symptoms seem to disappear.
Syphilis in pregnancy
Untreated syphilis in pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or serious illness in the baby (congenital syphilis). Testing and early penicillin treatment during antenatal care almost completely prevent this. Attend antenatal visits early and ask for your test results.
Prevention
- Use condoms correctly every time.
- Get tested regularly if you have new or multiple partners.
- Make sure partners are tested and treated together.
- Do not ignore painless sores or unexplained rashes.
Talking about it
Shame stops many people from getting help. Health workers deal with STIs every day; your consultation is confidential. Telling a partner can be difficult, but it protects them and prevents you from being re-infected. Clear, calm communication helps; see how to improve your emotional intelligence.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best medicine for syphilis in Ghana?
Penicillin, usually given as an injection by a health professional, is the recommended cure. A doctor will choose the right dose for your stage, or an alternative antibiotic if you are allergic.
Can herbal medicine cure syphilis?
No. There is no herbal product proven to cure syphilis. Only appropriate antibiotics cure it.
Can syphilis go away on its own?
The sores and rash can disappear on their own, but the infection stays in the body and can cause serious damage years later. Treatment is still needed.
How long after treatment can I have sex?
Wait until you and your partner(s) have completed treatment and your health worker confirms it is safe, usually at least 7 days after treatment and after any sores have healed.
Can I get syphilis again?
Yes. Being cured does not make you immune, so prevention and partner treatment matter.
